The friction

Running several pieces of work at once can feel faster. But sometimes one piece changes what another depends on, and that change goes unnoticed.

Impact

Work continues on assumptions that are no longer right. Instead of making progress, we spend time coordinating, checking and redoing things.

What might help

  • Check whether the pieces can genuinely progress independently.
  • Make shared decisions and dependencies visible.
  • Agree how changes will be communicated before they cause rework.

For me, the aim isn’t to keep as much work in motion as possible. It’s to make valuable progress without creating avoidable complications along the way.
